A Uno New York
A Uno is conceptualized and curated by owner Ann Benedetto.
After a career in manufacturing and importing, Ann opened her first store. A very small space in an up-and-coming area known as SoHo, on Spring Street, in 1992. We were looking for an image and found European designers with a downtown vibe excited us the most… it became our niche.
She stayed there for 12 years, opening the second store within Tribeca in 2002. At the time she was carrying a premiere line, Marithé + François Girbaud, that was doing so well they decided to open their own store. That's what drove her to open another —
“I fell in love with the store,” she said. “I fell in love with the corner. I fell in love with the windows.” The Tribeca store's corner windows, a full 7 window space infamous for their creative and contemporary composition that never failed to draw the eye. “At the time, we were surrounded by restaurants. Now, of course, they’re banks.” — Ann, on A Uno's previous Tribeca space. It was a vivacious area, with bright minds and artistic outlook. On the same street you could find well known restaurant The Odeon and, before it closed in 2010, Bouley Bakery and Market, an offshoot of the french restaurant a little further down on Duane Street. We loved the old Tribeca space and were there for twenty years.
Despite the change to the area and the devastating blow that accompanied it from Covid, A Uno persevered as it always has. Now, true to our love of the downtown sensibility, we are in the heart of the Village, the home of originality. A Uno is now artfully stated between community staples Knickerbocker Bar & Grill and Gristedes on University Place.
Our new website is for those who crave the new and fashionable with a downtown attitude!
